First Quarter Spending Looks Positive
The Research firm ChangeWave says the first quarter of 2010
will see a surge in consumer spending, as consumer sentiment
and expectations have improved. Consumer electronics
purchases will be the most significant catalyst of the
improvement in buying activity.
Bottomline: The 90-day outlook is as positive and hopeful as
any weve seen over the last two years.

BarterQuest Redeems
Barter Points For Cash
Online barter site
Barterquest.com
has announced the introduction of barter points into their
heretofore direct trade site. The points will provide traders
greater flexibility in finding and completing trades especially
when there is a significant difference in the value of the items
being traded.
Users will be able to purchase points at any time (one point equals
one dollar) and redeem them for cash. There will be no charge or
fees for the purchase of points, and a small charge for the transfer
or redemption of points.
Barterquest has partnered with PayPal to develop tailored
applications of its newest Adaptive Payments APIs to provide users
with easy and safe payment options.
A
secure payment feature will escrow points for a period of time after
their transfer. During that period they will be unavailable for use
in another trade and cannot be redeemed. If the sender of the points
disputes the trade within this period, the points will be held
pending a resolution of the dispute.
Attention Trade Exchange Owners. . .Its GROW OR GO!
The magic bullet for growth is sales, always has been and always
will be...yet the industrys overall growth is anemic. Why? Maybe
its because were not providing on-going education about our unique
way of doing business. Knowledge is always a pre-requisite to taking
sustained action.
And for those newcomers, the lifeblood of an exchange, awareness of
and understanding about the value of trading is even more important.
If you expect prospects to come aboard and your members to be more
active traders, but you are perplexed when the results are less than
you desire...theres a good reason. You must continually educate
and motivate every month--month after month after month!
Such action is necessary because, lets face it, more cash business,
not trade, is of paramount importance to your members. You must
break through this cash only focus and redirect their thinking
toward barter. Although most exchanges dont see the importance of
doing so, many industry leaders are taking action and so can you.
As the owner of your own operation, there is an easy and
inexpensive solution for moving forward...look
into using The Competitive Edge newsletter. Its a
camera-ready, 4-page, professionally written, informational
marketing tool...available in PDF format as well as print. So
regardless of how you reach your prospects and clients, you will
have the necessary vehicle.
Written especially for you, the busy trade exchange owner, I am
certain it will be the best investment you ever make.

A Look Ahead To A Better
Year
Entrepreneur Jay Goltz owns five small businesses in Chicago,
employing more than 100 people. Here are his insights and
perspectives for the coming year

The
economy is going to get better, but its not going to bounce back
entirely.

Find out
where you stand with your banker, not all banks are the same.

Its a
good bet that energy prices will continue to rise. It makes economic
sense to buy new equipment now because of rebates and tax credit
availability and its good for the environment.

Advertising and marketing will continue to shift and change.

Social
media is not a fad. Its one of the public faces of your company.

Between
rising health costs and new government regulations, hiring someone
has become an even more serious commitment. Understand the real
costs so you can make intelligent decisions.

One of
those commitments is the cost of unemployment insurance. Many
business owners do not realize that its the business owner, not the
government, that bears most of the expense of unemployment
insurance. So make sure you understand how your state works.

In many
areas of the country real estate costs have dropped substantially
its a buyers market. If your lease is coming up, check around to
see what the market conditions are.

With debt
and growth harder to come by, its more important than ever to look
at your financial health. Monitor profit, cash flow, Ebita, debt to
equity, profit per employee, growth rate, and return on investment.

What Propels Change?
Psychologists say change
normally occurs when there is a cataclysmic event, a clear vision of
where the change will lead, and a positive step taken in a new
direction. It also requires an understanding that change is a
process, not an event or a destination.
