Thinking & Action A Way To Develop Your Business

The owner of a small Chicago diner came up with a novel approach for developing personal contacts, to market and generate traffic to his establishment. He did so by standing outside his diner and hailing cabbies. Each time a taxi stopped he would literally hop inside and ride around the block, all the while extolling the virtues of his diner to the cab driver.

He would then tip them $5 and invite them in for a free lunch, handing them his restaurant scrip. Before long, he had a fleet of cabbies recommending his diner to all the tourists they picked up.

Swap.com Acquired By Finlands Netcycler

Finlands online item swapping (barter) service provider Netcycler acquired Boston (MA)-based Swap.com, but didnt really announce the deal at the time although the company sent an e-mail to Swap.com users that left little to the imagination. Since then, the Helsinki-based company finally confirmed that it has indeed acquired Swap.com.

Netcycler was founded in 2008 and currently operates item-swapping services in Finland, Germany, the United Kingdom and now the USA. The European services today have more than 130,000 registered users.

According to CrunchBase, Swap.com (formerly known as Swaptree) had raised over $11 million and is said to have attracted nearly half a million U.S. users. That brings Netcyclers total tally to over 600,000 registered members today.

With little fanfare, Netcycler recently launched a Swap.com valet service, which initially focused on kids clothes, toys, sporting equipment and kids accessories. The service basically enabled parents to ship unused items to Swap.com, so the company can photograph, store and list them. To accommodate the new Swap.com valet service, Netcycler has set-up its first logistics center, close to Chicago (IL).

Netcycler co-founder and chairman Jussi Koskinen remarked, Trading pre-owned items is a lot of work, and I can see why many people are not doing it. With the new service, we completely avoid the inherent problems of C2C (consumer-to-consumer) online auctions and marketplaces like lack of trust towards trade partners, unreliability of delivery, and high shipping costs.

Koskinen says the acquisition of Swap.com came at a good time. We are just launching the Netcycler service in the U.S., and the well-known brand and half-a-million users of Swap.com will surely help us grow our presence there.

Powerful, Inexpensive Way To Increase Your Customer Base

The law of reciprocity governs all commerce. Use it in conjunction with various members within your trade exchange, and exciting possibilities will occur! For example, consider what you could accomplish by working with other non-competing members by cooperatively designing and printing introductory coupons for each of your businesses. You can then begin providing each others coupons to your respective clients.

The benefits are many. Exposure is significantly increased, as your firms name and reputation will be seen by many new people. Additional cash customers will be introduced to your business, as well.

All thats required is some effort and common sense. Consider what products and services your customers may appreciate or need. Then approach that exchange member, proposing you work together as described.

Examples of pairs that might work will together are:

 Restaurant and fun center

 Paint store and carpet retailer

 Clothing store and dry cleaners

 Accountant and attorney

 Florist and jewelry store

 Veterinarian and pet store

With a little creativity, the examples can be limitless.
