Travel Business Rebound Provided By Business
Spending on airplane seats, hotel rooms and rental cars,
among other tourism and travel expenses jumped 3% at an
inflation-adjusted annual rate in the second quarter, while
the economy as a whole grew only 1.6%.
Much of the increase is fueled by businesses which reduced
employee travel during the darker days of the recession.
Commercial Real Estate Still Under Pressure
Like homeowners walking away from mortgaged houses that
plummeted in value, some of the largest commercial property
owners are defaulting on debts and surrendering buildings
worth less than their loans. And even more landlords are
expected to follow suit.
Of the $1.4 trillion of commercial real estate debt coming
due by the end of 2014, roughly 52% is attached to
properties that are underwater, according to debt-analysis
company Trepp LLC. (As the economic recovery sputters,
owners of struggling properties are finally realizing a big
property value rebound isn’t imminent.)

Use Barter For Developing &
Distributing Promotional Products
According to the Specialty Advertising Association International,
CEOs’ offices have become a haven for promotional products. More
technically known as promotional marketing products, these items —
clothing, alarm clocks, mugs, and the like — are emblazoned with a
company’s logo or message for long-lasting visibility.
They can be a great tool to generate name recognition and can create
customer goodwill, often at very little cost. In turn, they can help
drive sales. Nearly 90% of the executives polled reported they had
imprinted promo products in their offices from companies other than
their own. Of those respondents 48% said they had six or more
promotional items, and 18% said they had more than 15 such goodies
in their offices.
The message for marketers: Keep sending those promo products to the
bosses. Seventy-nine percent said they appreciate receiving
promotional products as gifts, and 71% said they use all or some of
the items on a daily basis.
What’s the most popular promotional gift? Sixty-eight percent of
those replying said they have imprinted writing instruments,
followed by 63% having imprinted glassware including mugs, and 61%
utilized desk and business accessories such as rulers.
Last year, businesses spent $16 billion on promotional products.

Think Differently ... See Differently
The biggest challenges these days
are perceptual ... that is, psychological. Not technical. Not even
skills-based. Work, in itself, isn’t getting harder. It’s actually
getting easier. But because it’s so different from what it has been
in times past, we consider it more complex.
And because we still tend to
approach it much as we have historically, we’re experiencing new
difficulties. The situation calls for new relationships, between you
and your work, you and your employer, you and yourself. Of all the
changes we need to make, the most urgent one is to change our minds.
Let’s look at our work in a
different light. Let’s think from the angle of the new realities.
This will position us to win in the new game of work. As always, our
perspective heavily influences our performance.
