UCLA Study Concludes Slower Economic Growth Ahead

UCLAs Anderson School of Management foresees that growth for the U.S. economy will be slower than previous postwar recessions, due to fewer new-home purchases and lower spending by cash-strapped local and state governments.

Annual growth for 2010 through 2012 will be around 2.9%, compared to the average 5% rate during the recovery periods after the past eleven recessions since WWII. The report also noted that unemployment will fall only by 1% over the next two years to around 9%.

Stunning Growth Of U.S. Federal Debt

The U.S. federal debt has increased dramatically in the past 18 months from 38% ($5.5 trillion) of the nations gross domestic product in September 2008 to 59% ($8.6 trillion) in June 2010.

Alan Greenspan, former Fed Chairman, says the U.S. and most of the rest of the developed world is in need of a tectonic shift in fiscal policy. Greenspan believes its mandatory to see spending cuts, but no large tax increase, if the country is to turn itself around.

Jerry Howell, founder and president of the Midwest Business Exchange in Kalamazoo ( MI), has just completed another non-profit project which illustrates how an exchange (and barter) can positively assist people and a community.

Bartering With Non-Profit Agencies Provides Benefits To Many

By Jerry Howell

A deserving eighteen year-old homeless male, named Brandon, was attempting to find a way to go to the local community college. Our exchange (MBE) found 12 members that each pledged one month of rent in trade dollars to a member local relief agency. On behalf of Brandon, the agency paid the trade-dollar rent to an apartment complex, which was another MBE member.

Heres what was accomplished through barter:

The donors enjoyed being good Samaritans as well as the resulting tax deductions, while the relief agency furthered its mission. The apartment complex rented a unit that otherwise would have been empty; it may now use those trade dollars for anything from snow plowing to printing. Moreover MBE did over $15,000.00 of barter business, and enjoyed favorable coverage in the local newspaper.

There is nothing magical about trading with non-profits ... its just a matter of putting ideas and people together.

Kudos To Wal-Mart Worlds Largest Environmentalist!

Good things are happening all around the world, we just dont always notice them. In 2005 Wal-Mart made the decision to go green, and today the worlds $400 billion-a-year gorilla has made a huge difference to the environment.

Within a year of its 2005 announcement, the companys 2 million associates at 8,400 stores used nearly 5 billion fewer plastic bags, and delivered 77 million more cases while driving 100 million fewer miles. Additionally, theyre now the largest buyer of organic cotton and milk in the world. (Economists estimate that $1 of every $3 worldwide is associated with a company that does business with Wal-Mart.)

It all started by working on a sustainability index, which involved sending a 15-part questionnaire to all vendors asking how they planned to help Wal-Mart meet its environmental goals. Now farmers and manufacturers, plus everyone in between, are rushing to change the way they do business. Harvard Business Review calls sustainability the next mega-trend ... a sweeping and permanent change in the way we all do business.
