Tax Deductions For Your Home-Based Business

The following is a list of tax deductions you may take for home-based businesses. You can deduct a percentage of many expenses based on how much of your home you can qualify for a deduction. For example, if you have a 2,000-square-foot home and a 200-square-foot office, you could deduct 10% of many expenses.

Here are the most typical deductions:

  • A percentage of rent, if you rent or lease.
  • A percentage of your mortgage interest, if you’re buying your home.
  • A percentage of real estate taxes and homeowner association fees.
  • Household supplies and cleaning services for the business portion of your home.
  • Repair and maintenance of your home office.
  • Utilities (electricity, gas, water) attributable to the business use of your home.
  • Trash collection.
  • Furniture in your household that you convert for use in the home office.
  • Phone services, minus the base local service for the first line into your home. (Lines devoted to the Internet and faxing may be entirely deductible.)
  • Business use of your automobile from the time you leave your door.

For more information, see IRS Publication #587, "Business Use Of Your Home."

How To Get Maximum Deduction On Business Gifts

Using trade dollars to secure business gifts certainly makes sense. After all, they build goodwill and valuable name recognition, which ultimately converts into increased sales. These gifts are tax-deductible too, so long as they’re business related.

There is one catch however — the deduction for gifts is limited to $25 per year, for each recipient. Anything above that amount may not be deducted. Twenty-five dollars doesn’t go very far these days, so the key to obtaining maximum deductions for business gifts is to choose, whenever practical, another category for the gift.

When possible expense your gifts as "entertainment" or "advertising," since these categories have no ceiling for legitimate deductions. Many giveaways legally fall into the advertising category. Such items include door prizes, handout and direct mail samples, awards for subscription sales, uniforms for a baseball team, and contest prizes.

If prizes or awards are given to employees, however, they usually would be tax-deductible as “compensation” expenses. And employee bonuses are almost uniformly considered to be compensation, regardless of whether they are incentive or seasonal.

Surprise — Brainstorming Best Done In Private!

Experts that have studied the popularity of brainstorming sessions in team situations, admit the results of such group efforts are usually mediocre. Paul Paulus, professor of Psychology at the University of Texas, has conducted extensive studies on the number and quality of four people brainstorming together versus four people brainstorming by themselves.

He concludes that typically group-brainstorming sessions perform at about half the level they would if they had brainstormed alone. So no more excuses — grab that cup of coffee and a yellow pad or iPad and get to work!
