The FutureLook Eastward

The balance of power in the manufacturing world is dramatically swinging eastward. In the U.S., there are currently about 14 million jobs in manufacturing. In all G-7 countries combined (USA, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Germany & Japan), there are about 53 million such jobs.

Yet in China alone, there are almost 110 million jobs in manufacturing. A powerhouse, the likes of which weve never seen before, is gearing up in Asia. And those Asian companies will be eager to learn about the Internet to connect with new markets...in our backyard.

In 1999, Intel Chairman Andy Grove said, In five years, all (major) companies will be Internet companies, or they wont be companies at all. He may have been a touch optimistic in his timing, but that doesnt take away from the importance of his message. To add to that, not only will many companies be on the Internet but theyll also have to become more global...or at the very least be acutely aware of the global competition.

Major Oil Companies Trade Assets

Occidental Petroleum Corp. and London-based BP will swap oil and natural-gas assets. Occidental getting assets in Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico, in exchange for giving BP a one-third interest in the Horn Mountain property in the Gulf of Mexico. BP will also receive a net cash payment of $100 million from Occidental.

ITEX Adds Co-branded MasterCard To Executive Privileges Program

ITEX Corporation (OTCBB:ITEX) announced it has launched a co-branded MasterCard as part of its Executive Privileges Program. ITEX is offering members a business MasterCard, with which their members have 60 days interest free on all business purchases.

The credit card will ensure that ITEX members can stretch their payment schedules without having to negotiate extended terms with numerous suppliers. This is a super value for inventory control, as one of the greatest challenges that small businesses face is how to stretch payment schedules to ensure that they can meet their operational requirements.

The ITEX co-branded MasterCard provides a great tool for managing cash flow, stated Steven White Chairman and CEO. Our Executive Privileges Program is all about ITEX helping its members improve their profitability and increasing cash flow and is at the heart of improving a business profitability.

The 22,000 member(s) represent a great opportunity to grow the use of MasterCard with small businesses, stated David Zalik, partner of Green Sky Financial. (They) represent an important part of MasterCards future and our relationship with a marketplace like ITEX represents a significant way for us to be successful with this segment.

With credit limits up to $500,000 and 60 days to pay your statement interest free (not 30!), this is simply the best credit card for businesses. It is the smartest way to buy inventory...and everything else, he added. ITEXs CEO Steven White has been relentless in his pursuit of this program for almost a year, and we believe this is a super value add for the business members at ITEX.

Industry Veteran Don Davis Remembered

On Saturday, April 28, while chopping logs into firewood, one of the commercial barter industrys early pioneers succumbed to a heart attack. Davis, 70, owned the franchise ITEX in the Northwest Barter located in Vancouver, Washington.

He was one of the first Business Exchange (BX) area directors back in the mid-sixties...working for Mac McConnell who founded BX in 1960. Davis also served for a brief stint as President of BXI, under Dr. Sherman Kearl.

A true gentleman, Davis loved the Pacific Northwest area and provided businesses in his area with his trade exchange (bartering) expertise for four decades through the ITEX acquisition of BXI.

A funeral service at Eastwood Presbyterian Church and wake are being held on Tuesday, May 8, in Vancouver, Washington.

AM/FM Radio Continues To Have Major Impact

According to the latest study by Arbitron and Edison Media Research, AM/FM radio continues to have a big impact on people's lives. Nearly one in five consumers say radio impacts their lives, ranking second only to mobile phones (35 percent) as the audio platform/device that has the biggest impact on the lives of its users.

Other key findings from Radio's Digital Platforms 2007 study include:

  • Among all persons 12 and older who participated in the study, the average time spent listening to AM/FM radio per day was 2 hours, 37 minutes.
  • Those who use radio's newer digital platforms (online radio, satellite radio or audio podcast) listen to AM/FM 2 hours, 45 minutes a day.
  • 11% of the U.S. population (29 million) age 12 and older have listened to Internet radio in the past week.
  • 16% of persons age 18-34 and 14% of persons 18-49 have done so.
  • 30% of Americans age 12 and older own a portable MP3 player, up from 22% in 2006 and 14% in 2005.
  • 54% of those age 12-17 own a digital audio player.
  • 70% of Americans age 12 and older do not own an iPod/portable MP3 player, and 15% report the device has had no impact on radio listening.
  • 9% say they are listening less to over-the-air radio due to time spent with their iPod/portable MP3 player.
  • 26% said they had heard or read about HD Radio in January 2007, compared to 14% a year earlier.
  • Only 6% said they were very interested in HD Radio.
  • Awareness of podcasting has jumped from 22% in 2006, to 37% in 2007.
Bill Rose, Senior VP Marketing at Arbitron, declared, Broadcasters should promote the vitality of over-the-air radio. On a weekly basis, AM/FM radio is used by the overwhelming majority of Americans, and it continues to have a big impact on the lives of consumers.

Travel-Agent Industry Crumbling

Not so long ago the travel industry was a relatively stable place. Travelers went to local travel agents who in turn acted as the channel for information from various airlines, cruise lines, hotel chains and vacation companies to the consumer.

Agents served a vital part of the value chain, and with clients highly personalized and variable needs it was hard to imagine how these experts could ever become unnecessary. In 1995 the number of single-office travel agencies peaked at about 22,000...and then things changed.

The online travel agents upped the ante. They demystified travel and opened up control of information to anyone who had internet access. Airlines and hotels readjusted their booking channels to be able to go first to online agencies and direct to astute travelers.

Soon, online communities formed allowing travelers to connect with others who had been there...getting firsthand advice on where to stay and how to get there. By 2004, the single-office travel agencies had been cut in half...decimated in less than ten years! Moral of the story things change quickly today.

Hotel General Managers

Heres The Easiest $100,000 Youll Ever
Bring To The Bottomline!

Collect cash, as usual, from the guest accounts staying at your facility that require the use of professional AV services. And rather than shouldering your ongoing employee costs, or your current vendors cash agreement for AV services, heres a much better alternative:

Work with a proven national vendor (a sterling 25-year track record) who will provide all of the AV services for your hotel on a 100% TRADE BASIS! (Payment to be in the form of hotel rooms and/or trade dollars.)

Your hotels annual AV billings must be a minimum of $200,000, and this offer is available only in the continental United States.

For a confidential introduction contact Bob Meyer via e-mail: bmeyer@barternews.com. (Please type in AV Services On Trade in the subject line of your e-mail.)

Attention Trade Exchange Owners:

If your member hotel(s) have a minimum of 10,000 sq. feet of meeting space and annual billings of at least $200,000 for AV services this is a great opportunity to earn substantial cash service fees on the hundreds of thousands of trade dollars your hotel member will be paying the vendor. Contact Bob Meyer at the above e-mail.
