Michigan Trade Exchanges Report Membership Gains

The Detroit News had an excellent write-up titled “With Credit Tight, Firms Turn To Bartering.” Two well-known and long term successful Michigan trade exchange operators were quoted in the article.

Founder and president Mike Mercier of Metro Trading Association reports a 20%-plus growth in membership over the last year. He said that many businesses have been hit hard by the economy, and that’s especially true in Michigan. TradeFirst president Fred Detwiler divulged similar success with his company’s membership increases.

India’s Film Producers Embrace Barter

In India small-film producers use “partner-like” marketing relationships with newspapers, broadcasters, radio stations and web portals. Through barter arrangements the producers trade the principal currency they have — the content of their film. Interviews, songs, sneak previews, and video footage are offered in return for contests, events, features, specials, and on-air mentions from the media companies.

  • Cash flow from operations totaled approximately $2,155,000 or $.22 per share.

  • Income from operations totaled $539,305, compared to a loss of $1,244,536 last year.

  • Total liabilities were reduced by $1,776,133 since the end of 2008.

  • Total operating expenses were reduced by $2,019,239 during the same period.

  • Payroll expenses were reduced by $1,755,903 from 2008, with no reduction in cash revenue from transaction fees.

  • Continued progress in upgrading its web site.

  • One of the most significant improvements cited was the growing use of its online marketplace, where sales volume continued to hit new records.

  • Management believes that all of these achievements continue to portend a great future for International Monetary Systems, even in these very trying economic times.

U.S. Sees More Millionaire-Growth Than China

China is supposed to be the world’s new millionaire machine as its economy grew 8.7% versus the U.S. growth of 2.4%. Yet the minting of millionaires (defined as those with investible assets of $1 million or more) in the U.S. grew 16% to 7.8 million. Whereas in China, the millionaire figures saw a growth of 6% to 875,000 millionaires.

Millionaire wealth in the U.S. is now more tied to the stock market than the overall economy. The U.S. stock market bounce back — up more than 60% from its bottom — has created better conditions for generating millionaires than in China, where their stock market grew half as fast.
