InterMedia Founder Dies
Sydney
Yallen, founder and CEO of InterMedia, has passed away at
85. Yallen founded the company in 1974 after a career in
advertising/media that began at the age of 13 as a part-time
office boy at a Los Angeles radio station. In 1967, he
worked as the West Coast regional manager for the barter
company Pepper and Tanner. (Pepper and Tanner later changed
their name to the William B. Tanner Company; they were a
major story in Issue #3 of BarterNews magazine.)
California Community Offers Barter Services
To Volunteers
A hard hit
economic area, Laton (CA) is offering people in the vicinity
the opportunity to trade their time on such community
efforts as street cleaning, teaching literacy classes or
painting selected buildings. In exchange they will receive
coupons which can be used to acquire needed goods and
services at selected locations within the locale.
Whats The Color Of Their Eyes

Vail Resorts Knows Barters Value
Vail
Resorts, which owns Beaver Creek and a handful of other ski
areas in Colorado and California, is cutting pay for workers
in order to preserve jobs. The ski-resort operator reports
that affected employees salaries will be cut on a sliding
schedule from 2.5% for seasonal employees to 10% for
executives. Employees also will receive a portion of their
salaries in stock.
California Cities Barter Stimulus Funds
Creativity
is alive and well in three cities in California as they are
proposing to barter their anticipated share of federal money
for highway improvements in exchange for funds that they
could use as they see fit.
Officials
at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is
responsible for distributing federal highway and transit
stimulus funds to agencies in Los Angeles County, said they
had no objection to this kind of exchange provided the
projects that are to receive stimulus funds meet the federal
criteria.
But at the
same time officials sent a letter to city managers saying
that efforts by more municipalities to take the bartering
process a step further will not be allowed.

Todd Bol Back In Barter Industry
After about ten years in the nursing scholarship industry, Todd Bol
sold the major interest of GlobalScholarship.net
and founded Care Forth, Inc. He is focusing on a variety of new
initiatives involving countertrade, barter, and a new innovative
economic model.
Bol, formerly CEO of Countertrade Consultant, Inc., is working with
the major government think-tank in the Philippines, the Development
Academy of the Philippines. It involves a new concept called
OPTIM-IZ that combines the trade exchange concept with micro-finance
and traditional charity models. The intent is to help build an
exchange model in a developing country.
Attention Trade Exchange Owners. . .Its GROW OR GO!
The magic bullet for growth is sales, always has been and always
will be...yet the industrys overall growth is anemic. Why? Maybe
its because were not providing on-going education about our unique
way of doing business. Knowledge is always a pre-requisite to taking
sustained action.
And for those newcomers, the lifeblood of an exchange, awareness of
and understanding about the value of trading is even more important.
If you expect prospects to come aboard and your members to be more
active traders, but you are perplexed when the results are less than
you desire...theres a good reason. You must continually educate
and motivate every month--month after month after month!
Such action is necessary because, lets face it, more cash business,
not trade, is of paramount importance to your members. You must
break through this cash only focus and redirect their thinking
toward barter. Although most exchanges dont see the importance of
doing so, many industry leaders are taking action and so can you.
As the owner of your own operation, there is an easy and
inexpensive solution for moving forward...look
into using The Competitive Edge newsletter. Its a
camera-ready, 4-page, professionally written, informational
marketing tool...available in PDF format as well as print. So
regardless of how you reach your prospects and clients, you will
have the necessary vehicle.
Written especially for you, the busy trade exchange owner, I am
certain it will be the best investment you ever make.

The Value Of A Network
Deb Cartier, IMS Barter Broker From Norwood (MA), Reports ...
One of the members here was looking for ad specialties to purchase
with her trade dollars. We didnt have a local member that could get
her the type and quantity she wanted, so I sent an urgent all
broker e-mail asking for contacts from other IMS Barter markets.
The response was fast and awesome my member just bought over
$13,000 of desired ad specialties (with their company logo on them)
and were working on more.

Best Place For Small Business To Get Loans
Most credit unions didnt get in on the subprime-loan market, so
theyre not hurting like many banks. Many also have extra cash as
investors have fled the stock market and put the money into savings
accounts. About 27% of the 8,147 credit unions in the U.S. offer
business loans, according to the Credit Union National Association,
a trade group based in Washington (DC).
The amount of business loans was up 18% last year to almost $33
billion ($28 billion in 2007) and the average loan size is
approximately $215,000. A 1998 federal law caps the amount of
business loans credit unions can issuecurrently 12.25% of assets.
Credit unions hope to convince Congress to raise the limit to 20%,
but the banking industry opposes any changes to the legislation.
Keith Leggett, a senior economist at the American Bankers
Association says credit unions were established to serve people of
modest means and should focus on consumers.
Credit unions are chartered as nonprofit cooperative institutions
owned by their members. Like other financial institutions they are
regulated, and deposits are insured up to $250,000.
Credit union officials contend they could provide $10 billion in
small business loans within the next 12 months without costing
taxpayers a nickel if there was a new higher cap.

New Financiers Bypass Corruption
By Hazel Henderson
My latest article, The New Financiers, discusses all the new ways
of bypassing Wall Street corruption and central bankers
malfunctioning money circuits. In my search for secure electronic
trading platforms exclusively for socially-responsible investors and
businesses growing the green economy, I refer to Entrex (the
Chicago-based entrepreneurs exchange).
I
am now in discussions with Entrex about partnering with us at
Ethical Markets Media and growing local green economies using their
patented new asset class: the TIGRcub (www.entrex.net).
Check it out...feedback welcomed.
In the past weeks, we were delighted to have meetings here with
Schumacher Society president Susan Witt, Prof. Jerry Brown,
co-author of Freedom from Mideast Oil (2007), and our
Advisory Board members Oscar Motomura, president of Amana-Key (Sao
Paulo), and John Fullerton of Level 3 Capital Advisors, LLC. We are
honored to be working with them all.
