Black-Owned Firms Show A 300% National Growth Rate

Entrepreneurship among blacks is expanding dramatically. The number of businesses owned by African-American men and women has grown by more than triple the overall national rate in recent years. The number of black-owned businesses jumped to 1.9 million, a 60% increase from 2002, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. (Overall, U.S. businesses grew by 18%.)

A Remarkable Statistic

Given the economic downturn of he last few years, it is quite surprising to learn that across the nation last year 28% of all the homes purchased were on an all-cash basis no financing at all was used. This figure was supplied by the National Association of Realtors. When the trade group began tracking the measure in October 2008, the rate was 14%.

Marriott To Leave Timeshare Business

Three decades (28 years ago to be exact), Marriott International made the decision to enter the much-maligned timeshare industry. Marriotts entrance, and sterling reputation did much to enhance and upgrade the industry. (Several other major players like Starwood Hotels and Wyndham Worldwide also followed them.)

Under the new exit plan, Marriotts existing shareholders will own the new spin-off company; shares will become available by the end of the year. The new company has yet to be named and will control the management and the planning of timeshares properties, plus the unsold and under-construction properties.

Marriotts timeshare business in 2010 had $1.2 billion in revenue, about 10.4% of the companys total revenue.

Timeshare weeks are often traded on a direct basis by entrepreneurially-minded owners, as well as being offered through trade exchanges. The one- or two-week units themselves are also bartered.

Would you rather compete against a firm with no ad budget ... or one that spends excessively?

Sometimes we get so caught up in running a company, we forget the value of new customer development the most important aspect of any business. One must constantly seek to widen the customer base. And the most effective way to do so is by informing everyone who can do business with your firm that they should.

The quickest way of getting this information to the largest universe of prospects is through advertising. Dont regard advertising as just a cost. Because its more. Its an investment in your company, and done property can move your firm into a dominant position in your marketplace. Effective advertising is not goodwill advertising, but advertising to create new business.

Which would you rather compete against, firms with little or no ad budget or firms that spend excessively to create new business? The answer is obvious. With an effective ad campaign you can make your company one that others are unable to compete against.

Keep In Mind Peoples Habits When Making Decisions

There are certain things that we know about people, and its important to keep them in mind as you move forth with your business endeavors this coming year. So you dont spin your wheels.

  • People change very slowly, and so do habits. If someone is used to picking up the phone to order a pizza, for example, getting that person to a computer for ordering one wont be easy. If your big idea calls for people to change their normal habits, it will be a long, slow process if it happens at all.

  • People are basically insecure. And they are especially nervous about anything they dont understand. Thats why online banking has been slow to take hold, because people are reluctant to send their money into the electronic void.

  • People are social. Thats why they arent going to stop going to malls or doing things away from their computers, and thats why your trade exchange mixers are successful.

  • People hate confusion. If your company has a web site remember this: if the site is very complex, youre in for trouble. People wont take the time to figure something out if it seems too difficult. Keep it simple. Make sure your site has the elegance of simplicity, or youll lose valuable customers.
