We're All In The Relationship Business

Ask anyone who has been in business for a while, and they'll tell you how valuable their key customers are. And, after you get to know them better they'll candidly admit that without these key business relationships they'd probably be out of business.

That's because your business endeavors have only three ways to grow more revenues:

⇒ You can attract more customers.

⇒ You can generate more business from existing customers.

⇒ You can increase the size of the order — which means more revenue.

Think about it for a minute and you'll note that two of the three methods involve customer retention, not new customer acquisition.

In the accompanying box you'll see three examples of companies that realize the value and importance of developing and enhancing unique relationships with their clients.

They're not so busy looking for new markets to exploit or new products to introduce, that they don't spend enough time on strategies to keep existing customers in the fold. The key to developing excellent customer relationships is to focus on what’s most important:

♦ Are you doing all you can to promote customer loyalty in your everyday business operations?

♦ How much business is each customer doing with you?

♦ And, how many of your customers are referring new people to you?

A company's reputation is created at every point of contact. The system you operate in is most important. It consists of your advertising and communications, your telemarketing, plus your fulfillment capabilities whether they be mail-order or retail operations.

Your goal should be to make your customer's experience with you a satisfying one! Doing that will build a powerful relationship-based business.

Ten Words Never To Be Used In Customer Service

 No.
Customers came to you to solve their problem. Saying "no" is the same as sending them elsewhere.

Better: Yes.

•  Can’t.
Worse than "no." It implies you could do something, but you’re unable to.

Better: Can.

•  Impossible.
This is the same as "no" with an exclamation point. There is always a solution.

Better: Here’s how we can help…

•  Why?
Why questions carry a suspicious tone and do nothing to focus on the present.

Better: Help me understand…

•  What?
This response makes customers repeat themselves, and in worst case scenario your tone can imply you doubt them.

Better: Could you please repeat that?

•  Policy.
Customers see "policy" as a dodge.

Better: Our mission is...

•  Listen!
Interrupting a customer is NOT an effective way to get them to listen to you.

Better: I understand.

•  Wait.
Who wants to wait…for anything?

Better: Let’s move forward…

•  Wrong.
Blame never leads to solutions.

Better: Our solution is…

•  Should've.
It's always too late to "should've." Had they known they should've, then they would've. Deal with the present.

Better: Here's what can be done now….
